Fusion Surgery

Fusion surgery involves removing a joint and making the two bones one bone. This is often a surgical procedure needed to reduce pain from an arthritic joint or to reduce a painful progressive deformity. Fusion of joint requires internal fixation. Internal fixation can be either surgical pins called K wires, screws, plates or a combination of fixation options. The goal of fixation is to stabilize the fusion site and allow for proper healing of the bone. At the Atlanta Center for Foot and Ankle Surgery, our surgeons utilize locking plate technology to allow for early weight bearing of the your surgery foot and optimize healing of the fusion site.

It is important to follow your surgeon's post operative instructions to allow for proper healing of your fusion surgery. Patient who undergo a fusion type surgery often get back to normal activity once healed. Depending on the location of your fusion surgery will determine your full activity capablilities.
