Fusion surgery involves removing a joint and making the two bones one bone. This is often a surgical procedure needed to reduce pain from an arthritic joint or to reduce a painful progressive deformity. Fusion of joint requires internal fixation. Internal fixation can be either surgical pins called K wires, screws, plates or a combination of fixation options. The goal of fixation is to stabilize the fusion site and allow for proper healing of the bone.
