Fracture Surgery

Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Fractures of the foot and ankle often happen and often they need to be surgically treated. For a foot fracture often your surgeon will need to reduce or realign the fracture to get as close to the proper anatomy and then fixate the fracture to stabilize it. Fixation can vary depending on the type of fracture and its location. Screws or pin are often used for simple fractures. More complex fractures may need a plate and screws or a combination of all of the above.

Following surgery, it is not uncommon to require non-weightbearing to the surgery foot or ankle and you many need to be placed in a cast after surgery. In other cases, your surgery may allow you to walk in a fracture boot. In your particular case, you need to follow your surgeon's instructions to obtain the best outcome following your specific surgery.
